Charthills Pro Newsletter - 1st July 2010
Is your game suffering because you aren’t getting enough sleep? It’s not a question that arises often, but new research seems to suggest a link between the tees and the ZZZZs...
As golfers we can all appreciate that our favourite sport requires a strong intellectual component – strategies, focus, concentration and endurance are all required if we’re to put a decent round together – and that requires clear thinking. Now take a few hours of sleep out of the equation and cognitive functions become impaired, negatively impacting your ability to play at your best.
Interestingly, the increase in performance with more/better sleep was most noticeable in the older and better players. In the study, the best golfers (defined as those with handicaps of less than 12) had the biggest improvements in their game when the quality of their sleep improved. Within this group, the average handicap dropped from 9.2 to an incredible 6.3!
So what can we learn from these results? Well, the drop in handicap among the better golfers probably reflected that the major limiting factor in a golfer’s game was not skill but cognitive clarity – something that improves dramatically when sleep patterns are improved.
So, it seems that the path to better golf starts in bed – but it still ends at the driving range! Click here to book a lesson and put that clear thinking to good use.
