Charthills Pro Newsletter - 17th June 2010
The sign up sheet for the Foursomes Championship is now up in the Spike Bar. The event takes place on Saturday the 3rd of July. Please add your name to the list if you wish to take part.
Feel it, it’s here! The FIFA World Cup is now well underway in South Africa and one of the main talking points – apart from the incredible noise produced from those “Vuvuzela” horns - is the new football being used; adidas’ ‘Jabulani’.
Here’s what they have to say about the new design:
“Made with just eight panels, which are thermally bonded to reduce the drag caused by traditional stitching, the Jabulani panels are pre-formed to make the ball the most perfectly spherical ball adidas have ever produced. As well as this, the ball has a textured surface, called “Grip n Groove” technology, which gives the ball the most stable flight characteristics for total precision. The dimpled surface is also beneficial for grip, for goalkeepers and outfield players who will be able to produce more spin if struck well.”
Does that sound familiar to anyone? Because I could swear they’ve learnt a thing or two from golf ball designers! Any sort of texture on the ball, or grooves that are on the surface of the ball, have a big impact on the nature of the air flow, increasing the ball’s energy by decreasing drag.
Now many goalkeepers, including England’s David James, Spain’s Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon of Italy say its swerving motion makes it impossible to track, but – according to Australian scientist Derek Leinweber: "If you want the goalkeeper to design the ball, they will give you an iron ball that sits at the centre of the field!"
The moral of this story? The dimples on your golf ball are there to help your game, so good golfers keep their balls clean!

James

The 21st June 2010 will see three teams stride out to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support in their Longest Day Challenge.
The two 4 balls and one 2 ball will be starting at 5 am and will be out on the course till dark. If you are playing here next Monday please make way for the teams and let them play though if they need to and maybe offer them a word of encouragement or even lose some change by putting it into their collection tin. Good Luck Ian and Steve, and the teams from Commidea!
The Captains’ Gala Dinner will be on the 31st of July . Tickets are now available so please contact Keith or Angela or there is a signup sheet in the Spike Bar.
After the success of the Vigiers evening in May, Deborah and I are looking at a date in October for a team from Chart to go across to Vigiers to play their members. I will advise you of the exact date as soon as possible.
The Rock Shack are coming back! We did try to avoid it but they insisted on playing here again! The 20th of August will see the band return. They will follow an early evening 18 holes and be accompanied by a BBQ.
With kind regards,
Sarah
